Upcoming Project: Automated Popcorn

We bought a Great Northern Popcorn Machine several years ago and have made an embarrassing amount of popcorn for our movie nights. It has three basic switches for heat, kettle stirrer, and a warming lamp – so why not automate it?

Our aquarium controller has been running like a champ for a few months now and this project is basically the same. Using an ESP8266 and some relays I can easily control the popcorn machine. Of course we’ll need to manually put the popcorn and ingredients in, but this should be safer (auto-shut off) and the heat lamp can be remote controlled so it doesn’t wash out our projector’s image.

Since this will all run through home assistant the logic should be pretty straight forward. We’ll also throw in some Google Home announcements so we know when the kettle has warmed up. I might toy with an audio sensor to detect the frequency of the pops to determine if it’s done or not. We’ll have to play with that one…

Stay tuned for the project…
